Big Delta is comprised of some of the Bay Area's finest talent.
Several of these artists tour with various acts, and rotate in and out of the line-up.
Lane Coker- Vocals/Guitar
Moving to the bay area in 2000 from Austin, TX., was a risk worth taking for Lane Coker, singer, songwriter, guitarist, and founder of Big Delta.
Having studied music at Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas, and hours of private study, Lane has acquired the love of many styles of guitar, however, Blues is his passion.
Not always playing the blues style, in 1991 Lane joined an Austin based, college alternative band called, “Nine Worlds”. A recording would soon be released and as the band achieved much radio success around the state‘s college and larger city radio stations, venues and audiences became larger. As a member of the Alt. rock band, Lane opened and shared the stage with artists like, Ian Moore, Chris Duarte, Dangerous Toys, and Eric Johnson.
1994 brought a new era to music with “Grunge Rock”, and many bands fell to the wayside, as did, Nine Worlds. Coker became disgruntled until he landed a management job in music retail, with store owner and legendary bassist, Tommy Shannon of Double Trouble, Arc Angels, Johnny Winter, and Storyville. After hours of inspirational conversation and one on one tinkering on the guitar with Mr. Shannon, Lane decided to make music a life long career and has never looked back.
Lane shares his education and love of music with his students of all ages, teaching music theory, and guitar.
Lane Coker, is just one more reason why, Big Delta, is Magnum Blues!
Stewart Burr- Backing Vocals/Drums
Having played for over 20 years, it is safe to say that Stewart is at home behind the drums.
A Bay Area native, Stewart started playing the local club scene in his teens. Thereafter he studied percussion at Cal. St. Northridge under the direction of Prof. Joel Leach and studio ace Steve Houghton . Stewart then transferred to Sonoma St. Univ. and focused on a degree in Jazz Studies. While at Sonoma St. Stewart recieved numerous awards, including three Evertt B. Person perfomance scholarships (1994, 1995 & 1996) and an Outstanding Musicianship award at the 1996 Berkeley Collegiate Jazz Festival. In addition to studying Jazz, Stewart continued to work in the San Francisco music scene playing a variety of styles including pop, blues, rock, funk, R&B, soul, Latin, big band, country and jazz. His big break came when he got the gig with legendary jazz pianist Bob Lucas. Bob mentored Stewart in the fundamentals of cooking in a jazz combo setting, as well as giving him the opportunity to play with world class jazz musicians.
Soon after earning his degree in Jazz Studies, Stewart landed the gig with blues harmonica virtuoso Red Archibald and the Internationals. Playing 300 dates a year, touring internationally, and recording Red's third CD gave Stewart invaluable experience.
In 1999 Stewart moved to New York City where after a year of club and session work, he auditioned and got the gig with the legendary Chubby Checker. Touring all over the USA, the band played all of Chubby's long-standing hits for enthusiastic fans. In Fall 2001 Stewart relocated back to the Bay Area and has been freelancing doing club and session work.
Besides being an accomplished and sought after drummer, Stewart is also a drum instructor with 7 years of teaching experience in the Bay Area, Stewart is comfortable playing all styles-live or in the studio. Stewart Burr also sings backup vocals, bringing an extra voice to Big Delta.
Kennan Shaw- Backing Vocals/Bass
Whatever type of music you love to play, the one thing common to all, is the need for a solid foundation. With a strong foundation, you're free to build any kind of house you like!
Kennan is a solid player, preferring the role of "Part of the Rhythm Section" to that of featured performer. Playing a solo does nothing for me, but finding the groove so that the whole band just feels good is what I strive for.
Kennan Shaw has been playing bass for much longer than he'd like to admit. Steered towards the instrument at a young age by "The Joy of Cooking" bassist Jeff Neighbor, the love affair has lasted a life time, the majority of which has been spent in Bay Area night clubs.
While stories of his "rise and fall" and misspent youth are legendary, Kennan really turned pro in 1990, when the family typesetting business succumbed to the age of the personal computer, and Kennan became a 'stay at home dad' playing music by night. He takes great pleasure in telling his parents "It's good I had the whole music thing to fall back on when the career didn't work out."
Since then he's played everywhere with everyone. The musical equivalent of the basketball "Gym Rat", Kennan will go anywhere to play, and that attitude has led to all kinds of gigs, from Nudist Festivals, to Mob Weddings, to Mental Wards, if you book it, he will play.
As well as sharing his talent with L.C. & Big Delta, Kennan was also long time bassist for John Lee Hooker Jrs. band, Kennan has played his Fretless Bass all over the world. "All I wanted to do is go places and play for people that want to hear The Blues, and with the Hooker Band, that's exactly what I did. It's been a gas."
His ultimate dream is to one day settle in New Orleans, playing music and eating Cajun food while he grows old,,,and fat.
Other great players past and present include :
Barry Shulman- Saxophone
Jim Peterson- Saxophone
Mick Berry- Drums
Tim Schane, Pete Roberts-Bass
Laurence Curtis, David Stier, Billy Hancock-Keyboards
